In Covilhã, water is part of the city’s industrial history as well as a resource that must be managed today. A public meeting from 1 to 3 October will bring those questions together, looking at water through historical, social, technical and scientific perspectives.
Organised by Covilhã City Council with the University of Beira Interior and HTC, História, Territórios e Comunidades / CEF, at NOVA University Lisbon, it is the second meeting dedicated to the cultural heritage of water. António dos Santos Pereira, emeritus professor at the University of Beira Interior, will speak about water’s role in Covilhã’s industrialisation. A roundtable will consider the sustainability of water as a resource for human activity.
The programme also turns to the systems that supply water. A panel on hydrogeology and water networks will examine historic supply systems, the development of Águas de Portugal, the conservation and interpretation of hydrogeological collections, and underinvestment in networks. A separate panel will address water heritage, memory and identity.
