The return of Our Lady of Mount Carmel to San Francesco restores more than an object: it brings the painting back to the setting for which it was made.

Bartolomeo Litterini’s altarpiece Our Lady of Mount Carmel has been returned to the church of San Francesco in Treviso, 48 years after it was stolen.

The return is part of the work of the Venice unit of the Carabinieri’s Cultural Heritage Protection Command. In 2024, the unit recovered more than 1,000 cultural objects, working with heritage authorities and museums.

Litterini’s painting shows why the destination of a recovered work matters. It has returned not only to a building, but to the space for which it was made and to a historical and cultural setting that has kept its memory alive through nearly half a century of absence.
