At around five in the morning last Thursday, thieves forced open a window at the Museo de Villena (MUVI), near Alicante, walked directly to a single display, and were gone within minutes. What they took was the Treasure of Villena, one of the most important gold hoards to survive from the European Bronze Age.

The collection comprises 59 objects in gold, silver, iron and amber, including eleven gold bowls and 28 bracelets. The gold alone weighs close to ten kilos. But its value was never really about weight. Some pieces date to around 1400 BC, and together they are among the richest surviving evidence of prehistoric goldsmithing anywhere in Europe, offering rare insight into trade networks, social hierarchy and craftsmanship on the Iberian Peninsula three and a half thousand years ago. The hoard was unearthed by chance in 1963, during building works in the small town of Villena, and has anchored the town's identity ever since.

The speed and precision of the theft, reported by Spanish outlets and confirmed by German news agency KNA, has investigators asking the obvious question: did the thieves know exactly what they wanted and where to find it? Police are now examining whether a gang specialising in art theft carried out the raid to order, rather than on chance.

What makes the loss so hard to absorb is not just the gold's market price, which is already considerable, but the fact that the treasure cannot be recreated. There is no other Villena. If melted down or sold piecemeal into private hands, three and a half millennia of evidence vanishes with it. For now, the museum's cases stand empty, and a small Spanish town is waiting to learn whether its most famous find will ever come home.
